Happy New Year!

The books I’ll be working through…

In other news…this is how I celebrated New Years Eve and New Years Day

Brent and I celebrated New Years Eve at Playa Provisions. Surprised?

Kathy, Ellen and I celebrated New Years Day by running from Beverly Hills to Santa Monica. It was such a beautiful run. Net downhill made it much easier ūüôā

We were treated with a BEAUTIFUL view at the end of our run

Quick Update from The Restless Runner

Christmas in Michigan was the best. Ahhh, it was so nice to be home with the four sisters, drinking coffee and watching the today show, eating tamales, shopping at the mall, and making family trips to the gym. Colby and Miles were also SO much fun to play with. I LOVE LOVE LOVE being an aunt!

It was warm for December in Michigan, so Marta and I were able to run outside twice. It was weird not to see any snow.

Brent and I flew to Dallas on Saturday to see his Mom. This morning I squeezed in a quick run before heading to visit his Grandparents. Boston training officially started today. Good ole Hal Higdon will be helping me out again. This is what my life will look like until April 20th. Any other Boston runners out there? What plan are you using? Is this enough mileage?

I’m reading a bunch of educational leadership books for my new job. I start on January 5th! Reason 1000 you should be a runner, according to Daniel H. Pink in¬†Drive.¬†Runners are GRITTY. I also find it fascinating how many teachers in the inner-city are runners too. Coincidence?

More from me on New Years Day! Goals, new job, and full Christmas Recap!

Holiday Half Marathon Race Review

Pomona Holiday Half Marathon 2013

On Sunday¬†Ellen and I ran the Holiday Half Marathon in Pomona. The week before the race I kept¬†going back and forth trying to decide whether I wanted to treat this as a race or as a fun run. I’ve been running lots of races, and have¬†been happy with my¬†results. I wasn’t feeling inspire by¬†a specific goal so I ultimately decided not to stress and just have fun with this run. I also really wanted to go out Friday and Saturday night to celebrate the start of my three week break from work.

Carbo-Loading on Saturday Afternoon

Brent helping me carbo-load at The Tripel on Saturday afternoon

Ellen and I ran the entire race together. She had also just flown in from India the night before so we had a lot of catching up to do. Run Racing, the same event management group¬†that organizes the Long Beach Marathon, put¬†on this fun and incredibly¬†well-organized race.¬†One of the things I love most about signing up for races across Southern California is getting to explore new¬†spots. The mountains in Pomona were beautiful this weekend after our recent rain. It was awesome to be running in shorts and a t-shirt with snow capped mountains in the background. The race started at 8AM, which was great because it meant we didn’t have to get up super early. I picked Ellen up at 6:15 and we had plenty of time to get to Pomona, pick up our packets and get ready to run.

photo (36)The course had rolling hills and looped¬†around a¬†reservoir.I didn’t look at my splits during the race. We were kinda all over the place. We finished the race in 1:46. Ellen is¬†a rockstar¬†considering she was jet-lagged and tired, and a year ago 1:46 would have been a PR for her. We grabbed as many snacks as we could (gotta love the mini-cliff bars) then went¬†straight to the massage tent¬†to beat the lines. After some mingling we drove back¬†and were in LA by 11. It was a great way to spend the morning! After all that running I actually just wanted to sit (shocking) so Brent and I went to see The Imitation Game. Awesome movie. Go see it.

Thinking of running this race next year?

  • Race day packet pick up. HUGE PRO!
  • Bubble snow flakes at the start
  • Festive! Even the finish line area looked like a Christmas Fair with all the tens.
  • Scenic loop¬†course
  • Cute snowflake medal
  • Lots of pacers
  • Lots of water and the volunteers were super supportive
  • Variety of post race snacks
  • Best post race massage I’ve ever had!!!!

  • Although much of the course is scenic, some parking lot running
  • Started 5 minutes late
  • Be prepared to pay¬†$10 for parking
  • Some runners were intimidated by the rolling¬†hills

PLEASE STOP ME IF I EVER GET THIS CRAZY. Nobody cares if you ran a 3:04 or 3:05.
